Active restoration
We lead and support marine habitat restoration projects in order to reach 2030 with the maximum possible number of hectares conserved or restored.
We do this using a science-based methodology, such as the one developed with IMEDEA-CSIC, and by seeking the application of innovative solutions.
Redeia has over 10 years of experience ensuring the good health of the ocean.
Leveraging our experience with Posidonia in the Balearic Islands, our biologists are selecting potential sites for future active restoration in the Mediterranean.
We will begin in the Valencia Region to leverage our experience with Posidonia oceanica, an endemic gem of the Mare Nostrum, but we will not stop there. This is just the first step that will cement a collaboration for the benefit of marine habitats. We will continue in the Atlantic, restoring gorgonian and macroalgae meadows alongside the Amicos Foundation and following scientific methodology.
More about Posidonia in the Balearic islands More about of Reef forest
Posidonia oceanica meadows harbour nearly 700 species – many of fishing interest – which find shelter and food among their leaves and rhizomes. Furthermore, they act as the first protective barrier for our coasts against erosion.
And, like other similar underwater meadows, they can store twice as much carbon as a temperate and tropical forest. In fact, it is estimated that all the underwater meadows on the planet sequester 10% of the annual carbon stored in the oceans.
We want to join forces to expand our reach
We collaborate on and support active restoration initiatives by other entities, such as that of our ally, the Ecomar Foundation, which has launched 'Posidonia Action' in the Valencia Region, a project to plant Posidonia meadows applying the method developed in the Pollença Marine Forest.
> Passive restoration
Through the removal of barriers or stresses that hinder the regeneration of marine habitats. We will do this with allies, partners, and collaborators who wish to contribute to the objectives of this platform. We will facilitate public and private collaboration in ocean restoration to expand the potential reach to other species and marine sites.
> Research projects
We will promote support for scientific institutions with which we will develop new techniques for the restoration of marine habitats.
We will promote the dissemination of knowledge to multiply the positive impact.
> Scientific dissemination
We will promote the dissemination of the acquired knowledge to multiply the platform's impact.
We have developed a Posidonia planting guide with IMEDEA-CSIC, which we share with the scientific community and society in general.
