Our experience

Redeia's actions

The idea of the Marine Forest platform had its roots in the Balearic Islands, starting in 2014. After the development of the submarine electrical interconnection between Talamanca (Ibiza) and Santa Ponsa Bay (Mallorca), Red Eléctrica became a key player in the restoration of this vital marine plant, motivated by the goal of deploying the infrastructure with the lowest possible impact on Posidonia oceanica. To that end, the company developed a successful methodology for the collection and planting of Posidonia, leading to the restoration of two hectares in Pollença Bay (Mallorca).

Over the years, this initiative has gained international recognition. From the very beginning it has involved collaboration with the  Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), the Government of the Balearic Islands, and the Pollença Air Force Base.

Redeia's actions

What have we done so far?

2014-2017

An R&D project

Red Eléctrica launched an innovation project focused on the use of seeds and fragments to restore Posidonia seagrass meadows. Development of restoration techniques.

2018- Present

Environmental education and scientific outreach

Redeia supports the 'Posidonia a l'aula' programme, created by teachers in the Balearic Islands in collaboration with IMEDEA-CSIC. The goal is to promote education, knowledge sharing, and environmental awareness about the importance of protecting this marine plant among students. In partnership with the Ecomar Foundation, we have introduced the #BosqueMarino educational and environmental awareness workshops in primary and secondary schools. This way, we help students understand the importance of preserving the health of seagrass meadows.

Pollença Marine Forest

A total of 12,800 Posidonia fragments were planted in Pollença Bay (Mallorca), making it the largest restoration effort for this marine plant in the Mediterranean.
After six years, the project has achieved an approximate survival rate of 90% -a major success that can serve as a replicable model in other locations.

2023-Present

Marine Forest platform

  • Included and approved within Redeia’s Comprehensive Impact Strategy (2023).
  • Formalisation of the platform and partnership agreement with the Ecomar Foundation (2024).
  • First Marine Forest scientific seminar, held in September 2024 in Pollença (Mallorca). Second edition is to be held in October 2025 at the Oceanogràfic in Valencia.

Awards

  • Good Practice of the Year award, granted by the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) (2017).
  • European Business award for the ‘Environment in the business and biodiversity’ category (2018).
  • Cinco Días award for business innovation (2019).
  • 10th Anniversary All-Star award from RGI. Best practice in the European electricity transmission grid of the last decade (2023).

Ecomar Foundation’s actions

The Ecomar Foundation participates in various research projects focused on the health of marine ecosystems. It is now embarking on a new phase, launching an initiative to advance and assess techniques for the collection, cultivation, and experimental replanting of Posidonia oceanica in new seagrass restoration areas. The initiative seeks to promote the active participation of both the fishing sector and local communities through awareness-raising actions and knowledge sharing aimed at restoring marine ecosystems.

For this purpose, the foundation collaborates with the National Federation of Fishermen’s Associations (FNCP), the Spanish Federation of Underwater Activities (FEDAS) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Its goal is to collect at least 18,000 seeds or seedlings (gathered from beaches) or fragments (collected adrift), enabling the restoration of approximately 3 hectares of seagrass meadows. This initiative is made possible thanks to co-financing from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) through the Pleamar 2023 programme. Furthermore, it also counts on Redeia’s support.
